Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin that is predominantly stored in the liver. There are different structures of vitamin A found in nature. Firstly, there is the pre-formed Vitamin A known as Retinol, which is only found in animal sources. Or Carotenoids, which are only found in plant sources. There are over 600 different types of Carotenoids, but very few are beneficial to health. For example, there are Carotenoids called, Beta-carotene, Lutein, Lycopene and Alpha-carotene. Once the Carotenoids have entered the body they are converted to all-trans-retinol where it is active for use in the body. The benefits to health include maintenance of normal vision, by using retinol from animal sources or the active conversion from carotenoids, all-trans-retinol.
